Poe was born on January 19 1809 into a family of itenerant actors. At the age of two, he lost both his parents, whose deaths are variously described as due to tuberculosis or alcoholism, complicated by their possible separation and the difficulties of raising their children. Their deaths, in any case, left Poe at an eraly age with a frigthening familiarity with death. Poe was adopted by John Allan, a rich Scottish merchant of Richmond, Virginia. The Allans moved to Liverpool in England, where Poe later studied French, Latin, history, and literature. Then the family returned to USA. A master of narration, Poe is above all and by his own will a poet. The financial needs that led him throughout his life to have to write stories for publications in magazines and newspapers of large circulation perhaps frustrated a more extensive poetic creation.
