Bogen beskriver danske kalkmalerier, som er en vigtig del af den danske nationale arv: It is certainly exceptional to find within the relatively small area of Denmark such an abundance of mural paintings in so many different forms. Every one of Denmark’s about 1700 dieval churches have been decorated, many of them not just once but several times. Some decorations date back to the first building of the church; others were added when the vaults were built in, while others again may owe their existence to a later extension of the church, such as a chapel or an aisle. In some cases the transition from Catholicism til Protestantism in 1536 occasioned further decorations.
