Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), one of the founders of Artek, was born in Kuortane, Finland. Alvar Aalto is recognized today as one of the great masters of modern architecture. During his long and prolific career, Aalto’s work embraced almost all key public institutions – town halls, theatres, churches, libraries and universities – as well as standardized housing and private homes.Although a fair amount is known nowadays about the external events of Alvar Aalto’s youth, precious little is known of his liking for contemporary architecture and applied arts. – Of Finnish architects at that time Alvar Aalto and Gustraf Strengell did wield the most fluent pen, yet seldom come across any concrete declarations in his writings until his Functionalist awakening. – But perhaps Alvar Aalto was fractionally more susceptible to new ideas as a result of his extrovert nature.
